Thanks a load for the responses (for some reason I was not notified of any of these, thinking I hadn't put a post up, created a new thread today then was 'told off' for recreating another thread by the moderators lol).

Plenty of useful advice here, and as the Panasonic Lumix TZ70 is in my budget I think I will order that tonight

thanks again :-)

I had a similar issue with taking my DSLR and lenses and so, some time ago, I bought a Lumix FZ200 which has the same sensor as the TZ70 but with a bridge-camera styling and a Leica F2.8 lens throughout the full (35mm equivalent) zoom range of 25-600mm. It's a very capable compact little camera but at the end of the day, the sensor is a small compact camera sensor - a lot of the time adequate but it's never going to deliver the image quality of the larger sensor of a DSLR. In optimum conditions it is good but if you have to push it, for example, in low light, then it will suffer compared to a DSLR but will still deliver more than a phone will. If I could afford it, I would like to go micro 4/3 but I can't. Saying that, I do like the FZ200 and I'm glad that I have it to bung in the handlebar bag or onto the belt (or even suitcase, come to that).
