What bike?

Hi, I'm hoping I'm posting this in the correct place.
I am looking to get my first bike in about 10 years, I'm looking to get a racing / road bike. What should I get? either an old school type racing bike like an old Peugeot or should I get the Carrera TDF from halfords?

Am a student and am on a fairly tight budget

What's your maximum budget? It always helps to work out a budget, then strictly stick to it.

In terms of what you should buy, it's always best to go for the best you can afford within reason. It's nice to have a racing/weekend bike work 1k+ but there are plenty around (including me) who've done thousands of miles on much cheaper bikes.

I'd suggest looking for a 2nd hand Allez or Secteur (both specialized) you should be able to pick up a 2nd hand one of those with a few upgrades for around the £300 mark.

Head to a big bike shop like Edinburgh co op so you can try out the real thing before you bid on ebay et al.
