I've never insured my bike because it is always inside a well-secured, alarmed garage or under me or in my sight. However I'm worried about the spate of burglaries in our area recently and am thinking I ought to do something about it.

Too lazy to research this - what insurance do you use? What's the cost?

For starters read your household insurance policy, the bike may already be covered.

That's who I use, but I think it is probably on the dear side for house & contents - I'm paying £41/month.

Blimey Colin that's a bit steep for a bijou designer cottage in HB. We pay £218 a year for buildings and contents, 4 bed house, with Swinton.

In fact I've just phoned them and been amazed to hear that for a mere £45 a year extra they will give up to £6000 cover on unspecified bikes valued over £1000. Anything under £1000 is already covered under Contents.

Wish I'd asked before posting this, sorry to have wasted your time and inconvenienced several billion electrons.

Glad you are sorted. Ours is via CIS for contents, costs about £25 a month, which includes an 'extension' for £10 a month for the best bike £4k and my fixed £1.3k. Bikes under £1k are covered.

We've had two incidents in the last 4 months - attempted garage break in and my car rifled through. We've just had a big security light fitted high up - well out of tampering position. My bikes are all d-locked or chained to anchors within the garage, but after the attempt, I've fitted alarms on the window/door and a PIR shed alarm. Seems to be a fair amount of garage break ins at the moment.

Our garage is covered by the house alarm and we have neighbours right opposite who work from home, their office faces our house directly. Which probably explains why we haven't been burgled yet.....

In fact, it is just a 2 bedroom terraced house on a cobbled back street (think Coronation Street)!

Yes, I've been thinking that the cost has risen alarmingly over the past couple of years. I could probably get it down a bit by fitting alarms and improved locks. I might give them a ring on Monday and tell them that I'm concerned by how expensive my cover is and mention some of the rates that you lot are paying!

Ours have been in the early hours, the bugger(s) spent a while trying to get into my garage - picked a weak point, but it was very well protected - took out the window glass only to find some big heavy duty bars in the way.

We've had no trouble for the last 16 years, but recently there has been much more of this - were even off the main roads so folk don't see me coming in/out with bikes (other than neighbours). One neighbour had some serious MTB and BMX kit taken out of his garage - high end downhill and racing BMX's.

I used to only lock the best bike down, but after a neighbour had his garage done (linked to house) I upped security more . My garage has always been like fort knox, but it's crazy now. I'm hoping the buggers just get off with gardening equipment if they ever get in.
