Keep your eye on the local papers classified section - there's always bikes in there. Carboot season will be here soon, again loads of bikes. Avoid the ones with suspension and loads of gears - kids don't understand them.
Also, just keep your eyes open - my daughters bike came out of a skip and after a quick clean up and check over it was ready to go, cost - £0!

crisscross where are you based ? i will have an apollo fs24 with either a 12 or 13" frame and 24" wheels that will be replaced soon might be a bit big . but i agree with others local freecycling website and the local tip , have picked up some gems from both sources

Dawes have recently brought out a bike called the Dawes Espoir, dropped bars, canti brakes, a couple of different wheel sizes. Would do service as a 1st road bike also as a 1st cyclo crosser (with a change of tyres). Maybe too big for a 7 year old - not sure.

Our kids had Gaint MTX 150 or MTX 225 bikes Alloy framed with no suspension. Decent bikes at a good price and fairly common so you can find them on E Bay / Gum tree etc
I think you could pick up a good example for £50 - £70
Also Giant has a good name so you can sell them on afterwards for more than apollo type bikes

They are mountian bikes though so tyres are quite wide .. if your long trips are on roads they will be heavy But for offroad i'd recommend them
