And to play like that while all wrapped up in a tux. There was only one Buddy Rich.

Every six months or so, I get a James Taylor Quartet jazz-groove-funk Hammond organ craving. This is why......

Something which comes round with greater regularity, though, is the most visceral piece of music I've ever encountered. Jimi doing Voodoo Child (Slight Return) live.......in particular at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970. The aural and string assault at the cacophonic start (some of which is missing here) is phenomenal, leading to the guitar going out of tune from the inspired frantic edge-of-the-neck string bending and the divebombs, tuning problems that he recovers from with aplomb. He then goes on to deliver the ultimate rendition of this classic piece.

I've often wondered what makes it so visceral, and have concluded it must be the way he plays tuned down to E♭, which with the amount of low strings he keeps ringing a lot of the time, and all the technique that set him apart from all other players, seems to generate vibrations that are some kind of resonant frequency of human organs or something. Whatever the physics behind it, when you play it through decent headphones with plenty of bass, and LOUD, there's nothing quite like it for music going right through your brain and body and making them feel good. What a player.....and what a superb (improvised) composition!
