Beck - Morning Phase
Back in the day I loved Odelay and played it regularly. For some reason though, Beck seemed to fall off my radar. However, whilst enduring a twelve hour flight last month I was scrolling through the onboard entertainment having got bored of watching the little plane edging across the Kaspian Sea. Beck's new album came up in the new release section so I banged it on expecting a more mature version of Odelay.
What I heard put a massive smile on my face, beautiful melancholic folk, drifting ambient chords and a massive nod to English pastoral sensibilities. One song could have come straight from The Division Bell, and his enjoyment of later XTC recordings is plain.
Needless to say I jumped on Amazon whilst I was still on holiday to ensure the cd was on my doormat when I got back.
