That's what I use just now, 2 nuts, washers and a couple of blocks of wood with threaded rod,

My problem is my nuts are quite small, something bigger or with handles would make them easier to grip.

Spanners were invented for this very reason. It is what I use.

I just clamp them in my teeth at one end and mole grips on other side...………..

I just used a couple of adjustable spanners on 10mm nuts. You could always try wing nuts with a bit of tube over a wing on a nut.
