I'd like to record my distances once I get out there and planned to do this on my Android phone.
I don't really need to do much else right now, just keep a tab on the distance covered.
Do you use an app that would do this fairly accurately?

Strava, it's good to look back on past rides and see how much you have improved.

No apps are as accurate as a bike computer, but if you want an app then I use Locus because you can manually set the accuracy and the auto start/stop actually works unlike some other apps. And you can upload the gpx file to Strava.

Hi I use cyclemeter on my I phone and find it great. It shows distance, average speed, max speed, calories burnt and elevation gain/loss. You can also upload to starvation, daily mile, twitter and Facebook. Very easy to use and store ride data. Is available for android, check out the reviews.

Map my ride as it stops when you stop.

Endomondo for me but I only use that on my mountain bike as i have a Garmin Edge 800 on my road bike but i do upload my rides from the Garmin to Endomondo as I like to see the days of the month i cycle in one place.
(I know i could get another mount on the mountain bike for the Garmin but just never got round to it).
So far i have resisted Strava as i don't want to start getting all competitive !!
