Anyone else think Hinault was drunk? And what's with Lance using the word "self-gratification artist" - a uniquely british expression that most Americans would not recognise - did he cut up Cav at some point and hear it repeated many times in a short space of time?

Well, no, in a word. Widely used in these parts as it happens, nd when commenting upon someone with whom you do not agree, even in internet postings. (but I'm much too genteel).

Methinks Armstrong may have picked it up in Adelaide earlier this year (repeated exposure to O'Grady, Bobridge etc will do that).

I think that 'self-gratification artist' is perhaps not as aggressive in Aus (it certainly isn't in NZ) as in the UK. Either that, or there are much worse things to be called there! Suffice to say, pretty much everyone is a self-gratification artist at some point or other. It's almost a term of endearment!

The Paul Hogan television show on Aus TV back in the 80's (90's ?) used to have a character called 'Leo self-gratification artist' who was a disaster-prone idiot, so certainly it's a word used in Aus, even if it has a slightly toned-down invective quality compared to in the UK.

But yes, never heard an American using it...

 True enough!

I introduced the expression 'self-gratification artists trick' to the forum a few months back and that didn't cause outrage, to my surprise. It's a great expression and has a definite usage; something that's not against the rules exactly but you just wouldn't really do it (unless you're a bit of a self-gratification artist!).
