They've owned the site of a previous doctors' surgery in Felixstowe for quite a few years, but the plans for the new building kept getting rejected by the local authority. At one point the reason given was lack of parking, but the site is next to a supermarket with a large car park round the back.
Planning permission was finally given early this year and we're still waiting for a start date for the construction to start.

Moderation gone made.
Agree.
To what end?
Have wierd representations been made?

Is this a Sam Smiths plot to discourage electronic reading?

I look forward to finding tomorrow that the entire forum is a single thread.

maybe I'll hop to page 9 to try to make sense of this jumble.

edit - aha - thanks paul - page 8 ends in december 2014 and on the beginning of page 9 we have the post by @T4tomo that was the start of this just this morning under the heading I think

"In praise of wetherspoons"

It isn't just that though. It is things he has said and done. Particularly his actions at the start of lockdown, when he initially refused to close, then said his staff wouldn't be paid until he actually received the furlough money.

But many (including me) , while thinking him pretty obnoxious, don't see that as good enough reason to boycott the chain.
The company (publicly listed) did not refuse to close at all.
Not sure where you got that from.

He didn't refuse once it became required by law, but did at the point where it was only recommended, and most were closing.

Are you allowed to read a paper?
What about any children in there? Is there a list of stuff they can't do as well?
(I used to go in a Sam Smith's in London (lyceum mentioned above) but would have been before this odd outbreak of Yorkshire puritanism)

Don’t know the intricate detail. Never seen children in there. Just know that one of our number was “admonished” by the bar maid for using his phone to check the bus times to get us home. She was a big girl, we complied meekly ;)

I'm suprised there's so much confusion around the rulez 🙄

You could quite easily treat your device the same way as a fag and go in the doorway or smoking area out back. Its not actually as big a deal as it's being made out to be.

Neither of those articles say that he or Wetherspoons refused to close pubs.
Neither does the wiki entry - see the source it quotes.

We still live in some form of democracy - folk can put forward alternative views/make cases to public and government.

More careful reading called for I think - tho maybe not in a Sam Smiths.

Bizarre - I can't think why anyone would go in there - I mean really the beer's not that great is it?
Children in a pub are good I think.

Not sure what the logic behind this merger is, but surely there must be a reason for resurrecting a 7 year old thread to merge today's thread with?
yes - and I would personally like an explanation of why the bizarre resurrection/digging up an effectively dead thread happened. I mean it took some effort. Why bother? For what purpose?

Whilst they get knocked a lot, I met a mate up in town last night, at the Knights Templar. It's a super old building, former bank I think, repurposed to be enjoyed.
Decent Doombar at under £4, which for central London is a bargain, even more so with curry and pint for £9 or £10 deal. And whilst the food is freezer to microwave, it was a perfectly decent plate of grub.
Plus you can sit at your table and order on the App, which was a thing for them pre covid.
I'm not a fan of the potty mouth owner, but they do run a decent pub.
Oh and it was good to catch up with an old mate.
Quoted as an aide memoire/to drag folk back from worries of dementia.
Posted yesterday morning, December 10, as the original thread start under the title
In praise of wetherspoons
(other views exist of course and freely expressed)

Date stamp - it's now still only Saturday December 11 - fear not folk - only a single day has passed - you haven't just awoken after a seven year bender. No folk behind the scenes have pumped gas through your letter box.

Good. Sam Smiths company policy is frequently and rigidly enforced by their boss Humphrey Smith who has been summarily dismissed a number of landlords for not enforcing the rules. I’d rather miss a text than put someones livelihood and home at risk.

So the ban includes even RECEIVING texts? Unless folk switch their phones off that's going to happen isn't it? Visions of some poor bastard getting a beep in his pocket and immediately being frogmarched to the door and thrown in the street.

Can you give us some examples of the sparkling conversation in this local sam smiths?

Is some latter day Oscar Wilde* dazzling the clientele in the saloon?

*By the by - factoid learned from a nice chap I got nattering to on my bike near Blackpool's north pier - Oscar Wilde addressed folk in the Yates Wine Lodge which sat opposite for years. (later burned down)
