What a fantastic evening for a ride.

Finished work and just needed to get out to blow some cobwebs away. By the tine I had reached the end of my drive, the rain was biblical!!! By the time I hit the woods, it was like a paddy field.

The going was boggy and tough - standing on the pedals just to get it down hills - the bike stopping almost dead when it hit patches that had been turned into quagmire by countless horses and dog walkers.

For good measure, I threw in a good few road miles. Must say, that, waiting at traffic lights, seven miles from the nearest woods, whilst absolutely caked in mud, did get me a few odd looks.

By the tie I got home, I was soaked to the skin (apart from my hands, which were toasty and dry in my lovely new Altura gloves).

Dried the bike off and covered her in GT85 then stood in the garage, finishing the last of my water with a big grin.

By the time I got to the back door, the missus had dinner well and truly on the way - the waft of garlic greeting me like an olfactory red carpet - an absolutely perfect evening.

Now, if you told that story to someone who doesn't cycle (and perhaps even, some that do) they would not understand you!!!

Roll on tomorrow - and a little 50 miler just for good measure.

I had a similar day here mate,8 miler with the dog on the mtb over the fields and woods, got caked up,wet and my god my legs were aching from pedalling through the deep mud but myself and the dog had a great time, came home for a nice warm cuppa, fitted my new handlebars and tape i got for xmas on the road bike, tinkered for about an hour, mrs came home from work and we rode to town,12 mile round trip, got drenched again (no mudguards on the roadie),dropped the bike off at my LBS for them to fit my new computer my wife got me,again for xmas, and whilst it was there decided to treat myself to a set of crud road racer mk2's which my LBS also fitted while we went for a much needed coffee, soaked through to the bone but got home had a lovely shower and settled down with a huge grin and my copy of cycling active..........my god i love cycling !!

I will put myself in that category; sounds like my idea of hell, to be honest! Give me a nice calm, warm, sunny day any time. I think the last time we had one of those here in Ayrshire was about.....1976. Honestly, I can't remember what the sun looks like; even when it's not raining it is constantly grey here, yuk!

Another advantage you have over me is the garage. My bikes have to live in the spare bedroom, so it is a total pain having to wash it down (without an outside tap) before I can bring it indoors. After the weather we have had this month, I sometimes wonder why I bother having a bike (well, 3 of them actually!).

That was an enjoyable read IanT and I've felt similar. Managed two mt bike rides this chrissy as well as using the turbo. The mt bike rides were road only but were both the same hilly route and were 20.5 miles, I drove it in the van just to get the distance as I don't have a computer on that bike. We've had some serious rain around the Manchester area over the last two weeks, so Brandane, yep a garage certainly helps. There's no better feeling than putting on dry, warm clothes, all the best, Broomy

I had an experience similar a couple of nights ago, I got back from a night MTB session looking like arnie from the scene in predator. Hosed my bike off and got in the house, you didn't need to be a detective to work out where I'd been, the other half was not impressed!

Ah, yes - I do count my blessings; a garage certainly helps. If I had to keep my bikes in the spare room, I'm sure my view would be different.

Hope you get some sun in 2012.

Sounds like she needs to change her diet if she smells that strongley of garlic^_^ . But nice to hear you enjoyed the ride.

Battening down the hatches here tonight in preparation for yet ANOTHER storm. That is to be followed by heavy rain and high winds on Wednesday. Bright but windy on Thursday then MORE heavy rain for Friday and Saturday! I just love this climate .

Really, really, sick and tired of these storms now  . Have lost a 15' section of flashing from my roof overnight and possibly a chimney cap and several slates too. No radio because the transmitter is down. Bins blown over and rubbish everywhere. Lights are flickering so probably going to lose power soon. Main road to Greenock closed because of flooding....... Just another day in sunny Ayrshire! Unfortunately it doesn't really improve much in the "summer"
