Specialized allez 2012 well happy with it, waiting for a less windy day to go out for my first cycle though!

A quick question, may seem stupid, but what is the best way to hold the handlebars?

With your hands would be best bet.

With drops, the majority of your riding will be with your hands on the hoods. With the hood between thumb and forefinger. That way you can reach the brakes & gears.
For more upright riding you place your hands on the tops as you would a flat bar.
For more speedy, get down into the drops.

Hello Zac, I hope you don't mind me adding this, but your question suggests you may not be familar with drop handlebars, the hoods are the cover bits where the brake and gear levers connect to the handlebars if it wasn't clear from what ianrauk said

You cant go wrong with an entry level allez well thought of bikes at that price point
