Was going to add, are these external bearings - if so did you get the shell faced ? - Square tapers don't need a faced shell, but external ones do - if it's out, then you'll get drag, and eventual BB failure.
Yes, as I said previously, facing probably is the issue here. Mind you, having reinstalled the UN53 BB and Stronglight Chainset, which has served me for 3 seasons of cross racing and training, I'm tempted just to leave it and sell the Gossamer on ebay.
