The Last Drop, located at the site of the gallows in Edinburgh's Grassmarket.

The Black Bitch in Linlithgow, named after a legend about a dog's devotion to her master when her master was imprisoned on an island in Linlithgow Loch.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
We used to have a Pineapple near us. It's now the Pomeroy. Which is a shame, because the Pineapple's been there long enough to have a road named after it. Suppsedly it was named after an unexpected fruit which came to Buckinghamshire quite a long time ago - but judging by the number of Pineapple pubs around the place that might be wrong.

Anyway, I'm going to the Tank and Paddle on Tuesday. It's named after the tanks which store the beer and the paddles on which the pizzas are cooked.

The Frozen Mop
In Mobberley, Cheshire, and a pub that I often pass on rides around the Cheshire lanes.

"Ask locals how the Frozen Mop got its unusual name and no two people will give you the same answer. Some tell you the story of a lady who used to let her lover know the coast was clear by leaving a mop outside at night. Others claim a local rugby team used to jog past the same frozen mop week after week in the winter, and soon started referring to their favourite pub as The Frozen Mop. Either way, it's a beautiful old Cheshire pub set in a timeless village that dates back to the Doomsday Book."

Deliberately stupid pub names - or even ones with some logic to them newly made up by pubcos and chains to sound old - really wind me up. I'm a bit of a traditionalist. Just seem to detract from interesting genuine names.

Was just thinking of that one myself! The Spite, a.k.a. the Roebuck at Newall - just down the road from what was The Malice...

There's also The Squinting Cat at Pannal which has a sort of similar tale to it.

In Eastwood, near Nottingham, there is - or was - The Man in Space, named as it was built the year Gagarin went into space.

I always thought The Five Alls (various places including Lechlade) was an interesting name.

In Fareham we have two Wetherspoons pubs. In line with the company policy they have local names. One (the Crown) retained its traditional name

The other is named Lord Arthur Lee, who is a local historical character....... unfortunately he was also a keen supporter of the Temperance movement and a non-drinker

The other lament that I have is the pub sign.

Greene King for instance had a policy of changing the sign of all their pubs to the Company's generic one before a backlash made them rethink. These are a dying art

Only it's not in Killaloe, Co. Clare, it's over the bridge in Ballina, Co. Tipperary. Nice food though.

There used to be a pub in the Bridge (perhaps still is) near the river where bands would play. Popular with motorbikers. Do you know what it was called? Sorry for the lack of details but it's been bugging me for years and the memory is not what it was.
