Had my 2010 Specialized elite in for a service on Wednesday and took it for a quick blast tonight to check it out before the Manc ride on Monday and whilst the new bb they fitted has cured the crank creaks I now have some very strange noises coming from the bike...somewhere? I'll take it back tomorrow but from a quick glance the chain looks like its not sitting straight on the rear hub cassette, it's got a deff lean outwards. Could that be making the noises? They aren't quite but close to chainrub but deeper somehow?

Limiting screws perhaps. Mine is knackered and a roadside fix didn't help.

Took it back today, they say it's the hub. It dint make this noise before I took it there and they now say the only fix is a new pair of wheels.

Does this sound dodgy to you?

It's MK cycles in Bolton.

They say it's something they can't service but IMHO I think it was something they did that caused it as it wasn't doing it prior to service. They said they put a new set of wheels on it and the noise went away.

Won't be using them again.

What kind of bike/wheels?

I have a 2010 allez elite which came with cxp22 rims and strange unbranded hubs. They were crap, and pretty difficult to do anything with. Changing the wheels was one of the best things I have done to my bike.

If the shop put new wheels on tell them to replace it. This is a faulty pair, if yours then upgrade. Get a decent pair for good money nowadays

What do you want to do though?

Yep, those are the ones! A friend is selling some Fulcrum 3, probably going to go for those!

No, they put wheels on just to test if the noise was from the hub, my original wheels are the standard Mavic cxp22. Well, for now!

Oh ok yh get the fulcrums and in your spare time either sell the wheel or keep the front or strip and rebuild with another quality hub(s)

Spesh stock wheels are pretty crap IME, but it would have to be a pretty diabolical hub that couldnt be serviced. If it's sealed bearings there must be a way of getting them out and dropping in new ones. If it's cup/cone then it is relatively simple to dis-assemble and see where the problem lies. Only if the cup is damaged is the hub for scrapping, new axles, new cones, new balls - all relatively low cost, and easy to fit.

From the OP I'd have been wondering if the gear hanger has taken a hit and become slightly bent.

Even though I told them the noise wasn't there before they messed with it they insisted it was the rear hub, even telling me with different wheels the noise went away and they don't service those hubs.

Unless it happened when they had it as the noise wasn't there before! Anything I should look for just to rule it in or out?

Maybe they know the hubs are just crap, and not worth servicing. Still a job worth investigating for yourself.
If the rims havnt too many miles on, might be worth getting new Shimano hubs and rebuilding it. Or even just taking the wheel apart and use it to practise your wheelbuilding skills.... it really isnt difficult. Get the Wheelpro book Possibly the best £9 purchase I ever made.

Gear hanger alignment really needs a special tool (you can build one yourself though). You can cobble one together yourself though, provided you have an M10 x 1.0 bolt (Important - the 1.0 is a metric FINE thread - not a regular M10 x 1.5). Have a look at this page to see how they work. If its badly out though you might be able to see it just looking from the back of the bike at the cassette and the relative positions of the jockey wheels.

I serviced a very cheap and nasty hub recently and as PpPete says it's low cost and easy. I'm not impressed that a bike shop wouldn't consider servicing a hub. That implies a poor mechanic to me (unless he's just sticking to the rules of the owner).

I'm sure you are both right, the mechanic hinted that they couldn't service it as they aren't Specialized dealers but I think they had already tried and failed. Weird thing is, on the Manchester ride yesterday, it seemed to have gone? May have just been the creaking of my knees drowning it out though!
