The danger is though that someone doesn't ignore her and thinks she's right and starts a vendetta against cyclists.

Journalists should be held to account for writing stuff like this.

Fortunately the Independent isn't read by the sort of folks who gather outside trials of child murderers/paedophiles as lynch mobs.
Birchill fits into the classification of fair and balanced as promoted by Fox news.

What I find more worrying is that anyone would actually have bought an independent and actually gone anywhere near anything burchill wrote..

sad excuse for a 'human'

Fortunately I realised that Julie Burchill was a crap journalist when she worked for the NME in the 70s so I haven't wasted any time on her since. Credit where it's due - it was nice of her to marry the equally crap Tony Parsons so that they only screwed each other's lives up - instead of making the innocent suffer. Shame it didn't last really.

I take it that you believe in original sin then as the first child she abandoned was the one she had with Mr Parsons.Has been married a number of times since too

Can you settle an argument? My brother and I are both big fans of your columnist Judy Birchill, but we are embarrassed to say neither of us really knows who she is! From reading her column each week, it is obvious she must be very famous indeed, which makes our ignorance the more galling. I suspect she may have been someone badly damaged in a chip-pan fire, while my brother maintains she is some self-inflated NME hack from the late 70s who has hauled her sorry arse from pillar to post for a quarter of a century selling her tiresome gibberish to whichever misguided publication will stump up the money. Who is right?

The Guardian published this memorable letter in response to some forgettable rant of hers 11 years ago. Who was right?

Sounds about right to me.

To me, the likes of Burchill, Littlejohn and other 'writers'/wind-up merchants like that are just professional trolls. They may be paid a lot of money; they may be writing for the Independent instead of talking crap in the comments section of kitten videos on Youtube; they may be thought of by some - and maybe themselves - as journalists; but they're still trolls.

Yup, trollumnists.

Best ignored. They exist to get your back up, so don't give 'em the satisfaction.

We seem to be missing the main point here, in the same article she is having a go at Sandi Toksvig. How could she! this Birchill woman is clearly deranged, and any mention she makes of cycling must be dismissed as the deluded ramblings of a fading hack who is thrashing out in all directions in a sad attempt to get people to notice her.

It's no wonder I don't read the papers. Who is this person, does she do anything other than spout rabid bollocks in opinion columns; I've never heard of her.

Most of these trollumnists don't even believe what they write. Take Jeremy Clarkson. Regularly slags off cyclists for the enjoyment of Sun readers, but his missus (and manager) is a pretty serious roadie, so his private views on cycling are no doubt much different.

Today the most stupid thing I witnessed on the roads today was:

Note the school sign ... in the distance children walking back to school and just to the left of the van someone walking on the pavement as it's school pick up time... in fact there were that you can't see because of the van - is there any reason not to be driving on the road... there is no oncoming traffic - no ... I've no idea what he was doing all I saw was him turn out of the side road and then onto the pavement. Luckily the van driver obviously decided the road was clearer so returned to it.

So why are we worried about a cyclist on the pavement when we can have vans instead driving along outside school.

Apparently she was paid £300,000 a year to write a weekly column for The Times.

Three hundred thousand pounds a year to write a few paragraphs of random ill-informed ranting that no one likes. I don't get it.

They allowed them to breed?! Our society is SICK!

(BTW there's no such thing as an original sin.)
