Thanks for the replies.

Looks like something for £10 or £15 from an outdoor shop should suit.

The Berghaus Deluge are almost certainly better quality, but are twice the price so not really worth it - for me.
Yes, those work fine too, but the bottom of the legs shred after a season ime, maybe it's the chainrings.

That's another reason for buying something cheapish.

I can see me taking the scissors to the bottoms of whatever I get.

I'm not one of their salesmen, but the Altura ones have a couple of velcro adjustable straps at the bottom of each leg so that they don't flap about. It isn't exactly a hipster look but it works.
Yeah, I considered them, but I'm going through a rebellious phase in my cycling, don't wanna look like a cycle commuter, even though I am one

Sorry, I meant the 10 pound one do this, the Berghaus come in 2 lengths, I picked the shorter ones, don't know yet how they will fare at the end of winter.

I have a nice pair I got from Mountain Warehouse (own brand if I remember).
I think they were advertised as walking trousers but they are very light and very good at keeping out the water. Got them in last years sale for £14.99
I've got those too and they do the job for at least a 30 min deluge. But like all waterproofs I've tried, they don't match my 34" inside leg once i'm on the saddle, so I also use something like these to keep my feet and ankles dry... and very fetching they look too!

What are they called? Do you think the bottom is suitable for flat pedals?

Waterproof overshoes or motorcycle overboots i guess... i got mine off Ebay for a fiver (that seller has no more items listed). They have a solid plastic sole with grippy tread, and the uppers are kaghool material with a side zip and foot strap... they've been fine on my flat pedals, and although i've only used them a handful of times and they're still intact, I can't vouch for how many more times they'll last since they look as cheap as they cost.

I bought the Regatta trousers in @puffinbilly 's link, but from a different retailer so I could get an equally cheap Regatta rain jacket as well.

Both items look OK, and certainly good for the money.

'Isolite breathable and waterproof technology' it says on the label.

I haven't tried the waterproof claim, but breathable looks unlikely given the almost instant 'boil in the bag' feeling I had while trying on in the kitchen.

No worries, I shall be glad enough of both things when I next get caught in the rain.

Which is my next challenge - making sure the jacket and trousers are in my pannier when they are needed.

Not a big fan of over trousers, I get too hot and also if the do leak on the way to work then I sit in a puddle all day. I prefer to wear just waterproof trousers and stash the regular trousers in my pannier.

I checked today as I was putting mine on - they're Regatta and have lasted me about 15 years occasional use.

Of course, this morning it stopped raining about a minute after leaving the house. They'd have been more use when we had a fire drill in the rain later on!
