The fins are for speed, they contact the tyre as you throw the wheel in at speed during a race. They don't contact the rim.

The wheels don't look to bad. I'd replace the logo's and go to specsavers - you didn't see that ? Naughty boy.

I used to do the above . When someone punctured the wheel was swapped as fast as possible. The wheel guides on the brake blocks helped you slam down the wheel in place without it getting stuck on the under surface of the brake blocks.

That carbon rim looks fine to me; I wouldn't worry about cosmetic damage.

I have also wrecked a rim riding in snow when my brakes iced up but a piece of grit carved a nice deep groove around the braking surface, ruining the rim. When I used to mountain bike I taught myself to replace rims by taping the new alongside the old and transferring the spokes over.

Thanks for your advice all.

Chris at VO2 swapped out the broken spoke, along with 6 others that he showed me. Happily the spoke damage was my fault and not a design/component error. A few weeks ago, after adjusting the gears I also adjusted the rear stop limit a fraction. As a result my chain leaped of the block whilst riding at a pace and jammed against the hub. I got it free and rode home not giving it a thought. the jammed chain had all but sheered the tops of the spoke heads and all six were about to buy the farm...could have been disastrous!

the rim gouge is fine and has caused no issues...except pride and honour.

So not only did i let the brakes wear down
and
Not only did I not spot the damage the fins things had caused
but
I also damaged the wheels again by faffing with the stop limit.

sigh.....
I really don't deserve such awesome wheels.

Oh and no I shan't be replacing the transparent spoke protector (before any of you suggest such a vile act...I really haven't learnt a thing after all!!)
