I had an email this week from Warmshowers. Earlier this year they introduced a fee system for new and newish members.

They've been talking about their new app for a long time and appear ready to launch in January.

This is the relevant text:
. 1.The new app will be available on both Android and iOS and will allow you to choose a monthly fee or a once a year fee ($2.99 USD or $17.99 USD).

I think this is a real pity.
I signed up several years ago (in NL) when I had no need for accommodation but as an interesting way to meet other touring cyclists.

As a host my experiences were mixed. One girl flew into Maastricht from Poland, bought a second hand bike, cycled to Rotterdam (staying with me on the way), cycled back a different way, sold the bike back to the shop (prearranged) and flew back to Poland!
I thought she was brilliant! Never done a cycle adventure before!
Of course, others, some even without bikes (!), just wanted free accommodation.

I've used it as a guest once (USA) although in this case it was a tourist office, I knew about it from other sources and Warmshowers was just the easiest way to make contact.

However, I have used it a few times when seeking local info.

A big problem is inactive users or out of date info. Several times I reached out to no response. I suppose a charge will cut down on that.

In any case, I see it as a retrograde step. I'd always suggest to anyone thinking of getting into touring to consider signing up for inspiration, if nothing else. There's now a barrier in the way of that.

To me, there's something iffy about charging people for their genorosity. Lots of hosts are former cycle tourists paying back the good experiences they have had or people with no interest in cycling but enjoy meeting new people.

Do hosts have to pay? They are already providing bed and probably board for free. You'd have to be super committed to pay on top. Maybe that's the point. It weeds out the inactive accounts.

Earlier this year they introduced a charge for all new members and nearly new members. I've been a member for several years so was exempt.

It seems that from January anyone wanting to use the app will need to pay.
Technically, older (fee exempt) members could use the web interface, but on tour, that's not the most practical, especially if on a phone.

It's speculation on my behalf, but I can't see the web interface staying free either.

Any new member has to pay, even if just hosting.

I agree there is an issue with inactive and dormant members but there have to be better ways of dealing with this issue.

For a "community", it is feeling less and less like one.

Just had a quick look on the website to see what it says to create an account and it asks for a one-time $30 fee to become a lifetime user. There's no mention about an app on the joining page about any other fees. I suppose this could be a stop-gap between the free accounts of the past and the new app coming out in January. If you're going to use it for two years or more, it's worth it based on the yearly price quoted upthread.

I have been a host and a traveller in the past, there is no way that I will be pay to be a host in the future, it is totally against the ethos for me. I can see this killing off the concept as people drift away. I have no idea why they don't just charge a 'booking fee' per stay for the traveller to pay, that way there might actually be a host in the place you need.

I received an "urgent" email from Warmshowers this morning which raises more questions about what is going on behind the scenes.

Hello Warmshowers community!

Please take a moment to read this important notice regarding our new mobile app.

We recently discovered that an older, unauthorized mobile app was recently re-released without our consent. Security is our highest priority so rest assured that your personal information is secure.

However, if you have downloaded and used this FREE unauthorized app, it is accessing source code that we cannot guarantee will protect your data and your information could be passed to a third party without our knowledge. Please uninstall this app immediately (the text in the unauthorized app states that the app is not official and is created by volunteers).

While our team is working on this situation around the clock, we have temporarily suspended ALL mobile app access until the situation is resolved. During this time, please use our website to log in and access your account. We apologize for the inconvenience and will notify you here and on our social media channels when the issue has been resolved.

We appreciate your patience.

Just a little update.
I've had no response from Warmshowers yet, but a little investigation in the App/Play Store (Android) shows that the "old" app is now the unofficial one. It says so in the "about" section.

I still have that app on my phone, haven't used it in months although it auto-updated last on Jan 21.

I'm far from a tech head, but to me that raises serious questions if some random people, even with the best of intentions, can take over an app and all the data it contains.

I think the wsandroid app is still the same team but the official approval has been removed by WS LLC and so the new version makes that clearer. There are several protections in most app stores against hijacks.

Wouldn't it be great if Warmshowers was free? However I can understand the need to introduce a charge as all that software development, web hosting & demands on computer power etc will come at a cost and from what I gather the periodic bike giveaways ("raffles" for want of a better term, as you need to donate to be in with a chance of winning thebike) just didn't raise enough cash to cover these ongoing costs.

Most of my Warmshower guests commented that not getting a response to requests for a warmshower was a PITA so as pointed out above, introducing a charge should weed out those who sign up then do not play an actice role.

Happy touring!

I don't have a problem with paying for such a service, and agree that "phantom" hosts are a problem (as well as pee-taking "cyclists"), I do have a problem that just to sign up to host will cost someone money.
There is a difference.

Also, I'm in a part of the world where the fees represent a significant amount to the ordinary Joe or Josephine. In Western Europe, the US or Canada it's not that significant an amount for most bike tourists or hosts, in other parts of the world (ironically where such a service is perhaps more valuable, yet more likely to be offered gratis) it is an exorbitant cost.

As it is, I need only pay a fee to use the app since as a longtime member I can continue to use the site. But if I needed to register (and pay) now simply to offer people a free place to stay I'd probably think twice.
That can't be good for the future.

What's the solution? I think we would all agree that there is a cost involved in running the site, and I for one would like the site to remain ad free. Maybe charge guests a small amount when they accept the offer of a warm shower? If there are other options, please discuss.......
