As Steve said, you can't get a warm jacket that's also non sweaty when you're working hard on a bike. However you can get ones that will keep you warm when you set off and providing you keep cycling will be fairly effective but when you stop and the wind is blowing the body temps drop quickly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meant to add it's not too sweaty either, although I find no item of clothing stops me sweating on a bike

gavintc, how do you find your Montane (Velib? H2O) for warmth/ rain/ breatheability ?

Not perfect - but pretty good. If I am working hard I will sweat up inside and get a little damp. But, it does keep the rain out and folds up small enough to go in a shirt pocket. I wish it had a breathing slit in the middle of the back.

i have a merino base layer and a gore countdown jacket, bit chilly for first five minutes then you warm up, jacket is well breathable and where I had a wet on the inside on my last jacket this is dry. The other day when it was freezing wore a light fleece over the merino and this worked really well, taking the gore off after ride and it was dry on the inside despite the outside of the fleece having a fine layer of moisture on it. Seems the merino wicked maisture away from me, fleece couldnt cope with it, gore let it exit. Was well pleased.

The jacket is also very waterproof as well as windproof so using layers is the way to go. Also use a buff head thingy , keeps my ears warm and wind out of my neck, sealskins gloves with merino insides are toasty warm and very comfy to wear as well as being waterproof. So my top half is sorted for any condition, I get too hot i take a layer away, merino + gore is good for mild weather too so wont get too sweaty when it warms up a little.

I have an Endura Air Defence jacket which is quite good for the winter but I find it gets very moist inside - when I take it off I can feel a layer of damp all over the inside. this is it http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/productDetails.asp?productID=9311&catID=206

It is better when at lower temperatures but between about 7-11 degs I tend to wear a short sleeved base layer under it.

I am not particularly after a waterproof jacket, although the Air Defence is the sort you could manage with for a while in showers or light rian.

I am after something similar which I can wear with either short sleeve base layer, long sleeve base layer or both in really cold weather, and will work in a non sweaty way from about 12 degrees downwards. Perhaps if I used something different from 7-12 degrees I might avoid the sweat problem.

Price is not a particular issue as I am planning to get this as an Xmas prezzie!

I was going to say nothing that's a jacket that you wear with a L/S baselayer will work 'in a non-sweaty way' at 12 degrees unless your'e literally cycling like a granny, but it makes even less sense than that - surely "really cold weather" and "7-12 degrees" is a contradiction in terms, is it not?
