Start with Sustrans Lon Las Cymru? It’s a great ride, I did it from Bangor to Cardiff but there are lots of variations.

I done Holyhead to Chepstow using the route advertised everywhere - very nice , tarmac on disused railways and some brilliant scenery - beware - there is some stonking great hills
Wouldn’t recommend the place I stayed in Chepstow though Chepstow was a lovely place
I stayed in the crown in Rhayader and that was perfect for what I wanted
And Holyhead doesn’t matter to you as not going there - I done it top to bottom as I thought wind would help but headwind all the way - hillier on second half

I did Chepstow to hay and that was a very good ride. mostly up hill till you hurtle down into Hay.

I'm doing it Anglesey to Cardiff end of June. Looking at the official route I've taken out some of the wiggly parts because of time restrictions.
What is the Taff Trail like from Merthyr Tydfil going south, it looks very fairly complicated, would i be missing out going on the road a bit?

As far as I know I stuck to the route - as in I just downloaded the file and stuck to route , I went wrong at the very beginning and couldn’t work it out ( just left Holyhead and lost on a golf course somewhere ) apart from that it was easy to follow - I even paid the troll ! As I only did it once I couldn’t tell you if there’s a better way , I can say that one hill seemed brutally unnecessary as it seemed to go out your way to do it

A couple of bits are on the road, but most of it is off road, some being gravel North of Abercynon.

You wouldn't be missing out much by following the road, so long as you don't go on the A470 (which is dual carriageway all the way South from Merthyr), but it is mostly nicer to follow the Taff trail, at least until Taffs Well.
