Glasto is an over exploited, actutely commercialised experience, and has been for probably the thick end of 2 decades. It's not necessarily bad, it's just become a bit of a caricature of itself, so I'm not really missing it.

However, I am gutted to be missing out on Ramblin' Man Fair, thanks to the the culinary habits of the Wuhan locals.

This is a lovely festival, held on a proper 'caravan club' campsite with brick toilet blocks, electric hookups and showers the main stage is in the former farmyard surrounded by buildings with proper catering facilities and bars. The same 2 blokes have been running it for over 30years.It can get a bit noisy as it is next to the race circuit (but I for one don't mind hearing tortured engines) and close to the airport. When the 'Download' festival is on the venue becomes the VIP camping area for bands and crew as well, away from the portaloos and burger vans the hoi polloi at that endure. It may be too staid for a lot of festival goers with a distinct absence of drug dealers but the 50 or so real ales and 20-30 ciders and perrys make up for it, and as well as the ubiquitous plastic glasses you can pay a pound deposit and have a real glass, very civilised although they've taken to closing the bars at 4:00am nowadays (previously I've been known to refuse a last pint at quarter to eight in the morning.)

Many years ago Hawkwind played the festival and Dave Brock liked it so much he got married there (the farmhouse has been converted into a 20 or so bedroom hotel complex)

Saw some good folks on the telly saying how they haven't missed it in some 20 years. Always amazes me how such folks always manage to get tickets. Is there a secret? Not that I want to go. Went once, but just for a day, back in 1992. It was big then.

It certainly divides opinion, that's for sure. The look on peoples faces on the Wednesday makes it for me. The slog down there, the walk, the tent pitching, all gets forgotten quickly, then everyone looks, well, happy.
