Well, I've been there and back again and it went without a hitch. Thanks for the advice/reassurance which I'd like to pass onto others. It was great being able to ride around town and see more folk than I've been able using local public transport. Then getting back to London, having been cooped up aboard for the previous hours, it was a good feeling to jump on the bike and ride back to the flat. Short of cycling the whole way I can't think of a better way to go inter city and for anyone who hasn't travelled Virgin with their bike I'd say go for it.

I got Pendolinos both ways and according to the guard the cycle carriage on these is always coach A which is either the very front or back of the train.

It is strange you can't book a bike in online. Given the limited space perhaps they don't want to make it so click-ably easy?

Yes, if you book direct online through Virgin for their west coast services it seems not. Perhaps if you book through an agent (the trainline for eg, it's possible?

Eastcoast trains has always had an online bike booking facility - it inherited it from GNER trains. It's great and reliable. It's something to remember for the future - you are not estricted to booking your tickets through the seviceprovider that you are going to use.

+1 - and occasionally a little ... "stroppy" as they "explain" it to you.

Worth trying the reservation advice here? - hey, it'd just be nice to know it works for Virgin. (Hint - I know it works for Student Finance England  )

This bit got around the automated options for me:
When making a cycle booking, use 08719774222 (10p/min), which costs a modest 10p/minute. Save time by saying ‘help with something else’ when the woman starts talking.

There was just a couple of rings and I got through to a human.
