Hi, I'm brand new to the forums here, still in my probation period for posting pics or attachments.

I picked up an older Falcon road bike last year and have been using it as my main ride ever since. I hadn't heard of Falcon before and they don't seem to be terribly common, but here in this little corner of the internet at least, they seem to be rather well-loved. Seems like a great place to learn some things about it!

Here are some details I can describe and can eventually post pics as needed:
- Reynolds 531 frame, solid red color
- Shimano 105 rear derailleur
- downtube shifters
- side-pull brakes
- "BioPace" slightly oblong front sprockets. I recall looking down at the front-and-back movement thinking something was wrong until I looked them up...

Where should I look to find other identifying info such as serial number, etc.?

Hi Casual Oldtimer.
You have yourself a really nice Falcon there. It looks in very good condition indeed.

In terms of identifying it, there are several clues to help us. First the brakes. Shimano 105 SLR were announced late 1986 for the 1987 model year. They are one of the best road bike brakes you can get. SLR stands for Super Linear Response I think and should be very smooth and effortless to operate.

The Biopace chainset were introduced in 1983 and were fitted for about ten years. So we are looking at mid 1980s.

The interesting part is the "Made in England" addition to the down tube "Falcon" transfer with the union flag on top. This had been used for a number of years before the mid 80s but in 1986 Falcon published a USA catalogue with some different models and that is when they started to add the "Made in England" to their machines.

The head tube badge is the classic foil badge that started to be used when Ernie Clements left the company in 1982 and it continued in use until the mid 80s - I have not been able to pin down an exact date when it was superseded.

So in terms of year, I would say it is probably 1986 or possibly 1987.

The use of Reynolds 531 tubing - which is excellent - is interesting because by 1986 the British catalogue shows Falcon using Reynolds 531c, 501 or cr-mo for its best bikes. However, the 1986 USA catalogue shows the Triathlon 105 with 531 tubing and forks. It has Shimano 105 throughout including the biopace chainset.

It appears that as you are in the states, so I would say the Triathlon 105 is what you have.

Wow, thanks Mandobob for the sleuthing and background info! Thanks also to Illaveago who pointed me toward a very similar model on page 30 of this thread even before I could post any pics! Indeed I am in the states, makes sense why they added explicit labeling "of England" that I didn't notice in other pics in this thread.

Out of curiousity, how would you rank this compared to other Falcon models / styles from that time frame? It's fun to find out more about this accidental find of mine! My uneducated guess would be somewhere in the upper-lower to middle-middle realm, but would rather hear from someone with actual knowledge.

I will send you a scan of the spec of the models in the catalogue when I can and you can make your own mind up!

It looks nice . It looks like it resembles a Falcon Triathlon 105 which was one from the Route 66 series . There is a picture and description from a brochure a few pages back on page 30 .
I finished my restoration of my Black Diamond a while back and forgot to share. Here’s how it turned out.

I would have put it at the upper end as it has Reynolds 531 tubing which a lot of people prefer.

Is that a straight red or is it a red pearl?

Here are a couple of scans from the catalogue. Enjoy!

Hi everyone - my first post.

I was so excited to pick up this Falcon Proline in what I am calling "Kingfisher" blue. The original owner told me it was bought in 1994 from Edinburgh Bike Co-op, not travelled far as it is now homed on the shores of Loch Leven, Kinross-shire. Although not a plush model the condition is amazing, it was put away after being used for three weeks and it was covered in oil and grease which has done a great job of preservation. The last image shows how I imagine the catalogue photo would have been - everything original on the bike. I noticed the front wheel is on the wrong way round!

I spent yesterday afternoon "servicing" the bike, cleaning it and polishing it, I think it came up really well. I went for a wee run, but I'm just on the heavy side to make good use of the Falcon, but will work on this over the winter.

I'd really appreciate any comments on this bike. I had a look underneath for the frame number, but saw that it's on an applied sticker. I noticed that all the stickers too are applied but not lacquered over - I wondered if this bike could have been used for other brands too, e.g. Claud Butler and branded up according to demand/ orders?

Here goes with the list of components, any I'm not sure of are marked with a question mark.

Frame; 21 1/2" Reynolds Cro-Mo double butted seamless tubing.
Fork; Hi-tensile steel
Headset; ?
Stem; ?
Handlebars; Mod Europa Super Racing
Bar Tape; Ambrosia
Chainset; ?
Pedals ?
Gears; Shimano Exage EX300
Hubs; Shimano Exage
Brakes?
Rims; Rigida
Tyres; Michelin Select Sport 700*23
Saddle Selle Frontera Basso
Seatpost; Kalin
Accessories; Bottle, Cage, Tioga toe clips and straps, Zefal pump (not shown was suspended from top tube).

Hope you enjoy the show - I couldn't find many references to this bike, so I'm really keen to find out as much as I can about it.

That looks in brilliant condition for its age. It clearly has been looked after. My interest doesn't usually go beyond 1991 (when the professional racing team had its final season) with Falcons but I do have a 1996 catalogue with this model in it. I also notice that it was not in the 1991 catalogue. If it was bought in 1994, that was about the time when Tandem took over Townsend and the era of decent road bikes (in my view) ended for that company with this model.
So, attached is the entry from that catalogue as well as a basic spec of the bike.

Mandobob. Thank you for that information and your kind comments. It's such an interesting history. I really enjoyed seeing your catalogue. We'll keep looking for a 1994 catalogue to find out for sure.

There was a very similar Claud Butler model "Criterium" which spanned a few years around that time so I imagine the Falcon Proline might have done the same.

It's funny how this age of bikes, as at the time, have still to find a popularity. For me it's so nostalgic. Great to learn about them too.

Thank you. Davie A

I do my best promoting Falcon bikes from 1956 to 1991 with the Veteran Cycle Club (V-CC) and on their rides. There are loads of people riding really old bikes but as time passes, this era becomes of interest. There are a few of us out here though.

You bike looks to be in very good condition.

Thank you. I love it. I'm a romantic for time capsules and "barn" finds. I had a Dawes Giro 400 from around 1999 that was like new and I regretted selling it so this makes up for that.

Luckily I kept hold of the first bike I ever bought for myself back in 1971 so I can only sympathise with you knowing how bad you must have felt.
