Sorry as there are many threads on this I guess but prices change often as do opinions. Im looking to upgrade from straps and as this hobby is getting rather expensive I could do without the wife going nuts.

Any recommendations or would I be better going to the lbs and making sure they fit?

Merlin Cycles do Shimano M520 SPD pedals for £20, brilliant pedals and really good price! I use this and have had no problems at all!

I got a pair of Spech BG MTB Shoes for about £50 in a sale and they are really comfortable, fairly light weight and look the part too! There loads of other cheaper shoes around that you could try out as well.

Well worth the change over! I've never looked back. Watch out for those clipless moments

+1 for M520s.

If you want to get your shoes cheap online you might want to use one of the bigger mail order places that has a relaxed return policy so you won't have problems if the sizing doesn't work. You should research carefully before ordering as with some manufacturers (e.g. Shimano and Sidi) you generally have to go up a size. How 'normal' are your feet?

Matthew, they are very broad but im only a size 8 (which is 42 euro). The M520'a sound the business, so does almost any shoe work with them pedals?

SPDs will attach to most shoes with a 2-bolt fitting. Nominally they are MTB pedals but in practice they are very often used by commuters, tourers or roadies who want walkable shoes.

The alternative is full-on road pedals (3 bolt fitting) which offer greater pedalling efficiency but are impratical if your rides involve a lot of stopping. This is because it is quite difiicult to walk any kind of distance in road shoes.

Do yourself a favour and get some new M520s for about £20. The pedals in that auction look worn and do not appear to include cleats. For all you know the bearings may be shot.

For shoes the choice is huge and you should buy what fits. You might want to go to a bike shop and try a few pairs on.
