I ride motorbikes and recently my wife has started to go pillion. I don't think of the 'what ifs' it's just not worth thinking about. I have an adventure bike now, although road bias, and done with sports bikes. It's taller, big and more imposing so easier to see and be seen. Regarding cycles though my wife hates me on the roads but sees it as a push iron has little chance against a car and little chance of been seen. A motorbike has better odds and is louder, quicker thus has the option to accelerate out of trouble or huge stopping power. Part of her worrying is why I'm looking at CX bikes and more off road. Inevitably getting places required some road work and CX are better than MTB and it does almost all the MTB can except out and out downhill. I don't bounce like I use to so MTB not for me. I live near the lakes so loads of great trail riding and Grizedale forest. If the roads or an accident put you off or the wife worries then look at CX or MTB perhaps ?
