You can also see Mars, Jupiter & Saturn at different times of the year just by looking up if you know where to look.

Years ago I was travelling round the world and was in Chile. By luck me and an East German guy ended up staying in the house of the local mayor or some such. He took us up to one of the big telescopes in his region. I remember looking at Saturn and being able to see the rings. Not like Cassini in details but it was still pretty awe inspiring.

Just looked through my birdscope again, yesterday, the shaded part of the planet was around 6 oclock to 8. Tonight, half an hour ago, the shaded part was 8 to 12 oclock and 20 minutes later it seems to have shifted again. That's at 60x magnification, times like these I wish I had a proper telescope, its magical to see. How do you spend 60 years of life and not see these things ?

I’d love that.

My avatar picture is a photo I took of Saturn about 12 years ago, with a 200mm reflector, stacked images - my best ever
I used to sketch. I still have a 12 inch Dob and an old Meade AR6 refractor. Due to my work commitments i haven't been out for a while, but im itching to get back out their with the scopes, even if it is the wrong time of year!

I gave away my two reflectors, only got a small 70mm refractor and a solar scope now (we moved house and the new one had very, very intrusive street lights  )

For (very) early risers, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are closely spaced in the small hours.

A few weeks back, one of my Mum's friends heard that the ISS would be visible for a few consecutive nights, and spent those nights glaring in awe at Venus thinking it was the ISS.

I have been intrigued by a remarkably bright...what I assumed was a satellite, NW and low, been visible for a couple weeks at least. Got my old birdwatching scope out and on maximum magnification, got a shaky but relatively clear view of what i assume is Venus in crescent, quite clearly crescent in shape.
Awesome to think you can see something so far away...
If you get yourself somewhere with barely any light pollution, ideally in autumn at a time of night when it's high in the sky, the Andromeda galaxy is an awesome sight. It's the most distant object visible with the naked eye and (I think) the only thing visible (with the naked eye) outside of our home galaxy.

Where i live, you can just make out the milky way with good night adapted eyes using adverted vision in the Spring and Autumn. Andromeda is visible in the same way. Splitting hairs a bit, but the Triangulum Galaxy is 'possible' with the naked eye, which some have seen, which is a little bit further away but much smaller and harder to see. I've never seen it with the naked eye....

Venus was very bright around the last full moon. IIRC there were 3 or 4 cloudless nights (at least around 9.30 - 10.30) and it was brilliant in the NE sky.
Jupiter and Saturn have been visible for about a week. I woke about 4am last Thursday and Jupiter and Saturn were both visible in the SSE. I managed to get some pictures but the camera really isn't good enough and I don't have a adapter for my telescope.
