I heard that about roadkill, but what is the law about house kill? We get a lot of birds flying into windows and dying. Mostly small birds but occasionally wood pidgeons and today our first Pheasant!! Can we eat it legally? We did not hit it, it hit our window. We just came along and found it (after hearing the loud bang of it happening).

It is a fair old size male I think. It got our terrier';s attention when I picked it up. She was shaking violently in excitement. I think she got a few bits of pheasant from my parents once when they looked after her so I think she knows the smell!!

Mind you we are about to go away so I suspect it is a bin job. We do not have time to pluck and can't leave it anywhere while away or take it with us. My query about legality of taking it for the pot is out of interest... this time that is!! ^_^

from what I know the distinction is whether you were responsible fro it dying or not
so if you are driving a car which hits it them you can;t eat it

but if it flies into something (house car or whatever) without you taking any action then you are OK

probably

No time. I offered it to the neighbours but they weren;'t interested. Looks like a bin job. We don't ahve time to pluck it now and can't even give it away.

The young couple next door would probably take it but not seen them and won't as we will be away before they come back I think. They keep livestock so are probably ok with this sort of prep.

It is a shame to waste a good house kil bird. Hey, maybe the next one!!

you could have skinned it, gutted it an put it in the freezer by the time you were typing that.

Plucking feathers is laborious and messy, Skinning it with feathers on takes a minute tops.

Isn't there something about roadkill

where if you hit it yourself then you are not allowed to take it away

but if someone else hits it then you "just come across it" then you can take it away and eat it???

I seem to remember a friend who lived in the country telling me this a while ago

Yes, that is correct.

I never bother with plucking, far too much of a faff. Skinning and gutting doesn't take long. Save the giblets too.

The feathers make fantastic cat toys. And Madam Lexi always enjoys her share of the meat trimmings.

I couldn't. Never done a pheasant only rabbit and that's not quick for me neither.

I was in Lidl today, they had fresh Venison burgers and sausages.
I didn't buy any this time because I've got lots of food in the freezer at the moment, but I had them from Lidl before.
They were nice.

Picked up a half kilo tray of venison sausages for a fiver in the butcher's in town this afternoon, made from locally-sourced wild venison. Plan on casseroling them later this week along with mushrooms and baby shallots.

Now regretting I didn't buy a single serve bottle of red wine whilst in town, in order to braise the sausages in.

Single serve bottle of wine????

Isn;t that just a bottle of wine??

(asking for a friend!!!)

I find the 75 cl ones make a good single serve portion.

Those bar wine glasses are getting bigger every year.

You do know they only do them that big to make more money out of the ppl who only order a glass not a bottle, to prevent bottles left half drunk. It started with two glasses per bottle now who knows!;)
