I recently bought a Mistral, which has a similar frame. I used a few internet sizing guides, including the VN one and all pointed me to use a bigger frame size than I was expecting (I am 5'11). The top tube length is perhaps more critical than the size per se. I went to the lbs and there we agreed to order in the 58cm size. This has been fine; the head tube is longer than I am used to but this means that I can now bear to be on the drops for an extended period.

What the industry really needs is a sizing system based on stand-over at the head tube and effective top tube length. Given that bb heights, front and rear bases and frame angles hardly vary, the 'length of the seat tube' is irrelevant and, particularly in this age of compact frames, totally confusing.

560mm though.

As Paul alluded to it's more to do with contact points than the size of the frame - you can usually get a preferred set up on different size frames using different stem sizes and spacers.

If you are comfortable with the set up on your existing bike, take the measurements from that ans see how they would work out on the different frames sizes. I'd go with these measurements:

  1. Saddle height from centre of BB to top of saddle, measured up the seat tube.
  2. Saddle set back from centre of BB to tip of saddle (use a plumb line to measure).
  3. Drop from saddle to bars.
  4. Distance from nose of saddle to centre of bars.
You can use these four measurements to get your set up on different frames but to my mind the ideal frame won't have too long or short a stem and too many spacers under the stem.

Just a quick update. I went for a 56cm frame. I've been told to expect delivery this Friday. I'll post pictures and an update over the weekend.

Another update, but this one is not a good one. More of a rant.

My ‘euros’ was ordered through Leisure Lakes, Bury.

After three weeks of waiting I rang last Tuesday for an update. I was told the bike was in stock, and after checking with the workshop, would be built up Wednesday ready for delivery on Friday. I asked twice that the bike would definitely be delivered on Friday.

Please also note that all the contacting and running around was done by me. Not once was I contacted about my order.

So Thursday comes and I think to myself I’ll ring to get the tracking number. I phone and ask for the number. I’m then told that my bike wasn’t ready for dispatch. I tell the guy that I was told my bike would be with me for Friday. He then says he’ll look into it and get back to me.

After another return phone call, they start coming up with excuses why my bike wasn’t ready. I told them in no uncertain terms that if my bike was not here by Friday I’ll be cancelling my order.

Never have I been treated so shoddily and with such a low level of customer service. It was as if I was a nuisance for expecting my bike to be delivered on the day promised.

I’ll see what happens tomorrow. One p***** off customer.

That's disappointing John. I have been to that shop a couple of times and they can get quite busy but on the whole I reckon the weekend staff are less experienced than the regular guys (not that this makes any difference in your case).

How far do you live from there, can you not arrange to pick it up yourself?

I know it was very disappointing. It was not a cheap purchase for me. I would have thought an update occasionally on how my order was doing would have been helpful since a I had to wait three weeks. But what really annoyed me was the promise of delivery for Friday, if I hadn't phoned I'd have took a day off for no reason.

They did get the bike to me by Friday but it was a very rushed job and only because I threatened to cancel.

The shop holds a vast amount of stock but I think their staff need some serious training in customer care and understand that when they tell someone something will be delivered on a certain day, they implement the actions they promised you. It seemed to me once they put the phone down you where forgotten about and they just got on with their own thing.

Would I buy from them again. In person and it was in stock, maybe. Mail order, no. I'd rather give my money to a company who knows what customer care is.

Pictures and an update to follow.
