What is the sign for a shared use pavement, is it a blue circle with a bike, and people on it, and no further indication on the pavement I separating line?

Where are you trying to cycle to/from? There are plenty of cycle paths in those parts you've mentioned.

I'm not a fan of pavements - uneven surfaces, littered with glass and other debris, don't always have a flat kerbs when crossing side roads and potential run-ins with pedestrians

Give me a nice smooth road anyday

I know down south this is view rather differently and kind of a no no though to be fair and brutal I saved myself 30mins or more on my journey time if i stuck to the road what with the number of traffic lights on the journey home down Paisley road west .

Some of us locals might have a different view as well!

I've been commuting from the south side of Paisley to the centre of Glasgow along Paisley Road West for the last 5 years and I have to say that if I was to travel on the pavement, there's no way I would be significantly faster than riding on the road - even if every light was red. I probably spend a maximum of 5 or 6 minutes stopped at lights - and some of the lights you would have to stop at on the pavement anyway due to the volume of traffic. TBH, there are not that many lights on PRW and there are several places where there are likely to be lots of pedestrians about.

So to save potentially just a couple of minutes you cycle illegally and probably piss off pedestrians every time you do it. Well done!

I wish I lived where you do. Haven't seen a nice smooth road in years.
+1, roads around here are absolute bobbins.

It is illegal to cycle on the pavement - s72 of the Highway Act 1835 as amended by s85(1) of the Local Government Act 1888 - unless the pavement has been made officially into a cycle track or shared use pavement or is not alongside a road.

Cycling at speed on the pavement is also very risky, even if it is late at night. In the three cases over recent years where a pedestrian has been hit and killed on the pavement one cyclist was jailed, one only escaped jail because of special circumstances and the third received a hefty fine.

How strange...I thought I read in one of the mags back in Feb that it wasn't illegal...nevermind!

I read in one of the mags that it is illegal even for children to ride on the pavement. A blind eye is turned not least because children under 12 can't be prosecuted (I forget the terminology for that).
