In the "Summer 2011" issue of Cycling Active magazine, there's a review of British single speed bikes. It's accompanied by a photo of a gent (seemingly) using a mobile phone.

I'm fairly certain that there's common agreement that using a mobile whilst cycling is irresponsible. So why would they show it in this magazine? Could it be that he's actually NOT on the phone and merely holding his cheek due to tooth ache?

Cannot actually see the phone when the picture is at full size.

Toothache or cupping his ear?

I do that all the time, its the getting it out of the Jersey thats hard. A bad plan in traffic but off road or in the country where its quiet no worries. Hell I've booked work that way

He's stationary!

It's a posed publicity shot because there is one light source low to his right (the handlebar shadow on his knee is above it) and there's a low flll in flash to his left and low as the seatstay and fork shadows are to the right.

Now whether it's a good image to use in publicity is another matter!

Yes, it's obviously a staged shot due to the excessive fill in flash. Bet he's going VERY slowly... or the stand that's holding him upright has been air-brushed out.

I wasn't suggesting for a moment that this was a candid shot of Joe Bloggs in mid-commute, but I was illustrating a suspect judgement for the magazine to print this.
