I've got a forme hyprid with 27 speed acera gears on it,is it worth upgrading to deore or the xtr( I'm just after a better gear change) what would I have to change on the bike and roughly the cost of it all,and also in a few months time I'm doing a 60 mile charity event so I'm in need of changing the tyres to a road tyre currently got kendra small block tyres and need something more suitable cheers

I wouldn't. I have had Acera and Deore, couldn't tell you the differences between the gear change if each is set up right

Probably be better to get better wheels and narrower tyres

Hi vickster having spent some time with the bike I'm happy with the hydraulic brakes etc but to be honest I'm finding changing gears are rather clumsy sound very notchy when changing I've had this from the beginning (2weeks old bike) set up from my lbs where I purchased the bike I'm going to get the gears serviced and if I'm still not happy then the upgrade will stand just don't know what I need to change ie do I just change the shifters or all components

If you really want to upgrade then the rear derailuer with a quality chain from kmc and shifters would be top of the list.
The biggest difference to the weight of the bike would be lighter wheels with smooth road tyres. Not sure what size you have now,but i put some schwalbe city jets (26 x 1.5),on a mtb and the difference was amazing

My first objective isn't to lose bike weight it's just to get better gear change and I'm as for tyres I'm doing the Manchester to Blackpool charity event in the summer. 63 miles o Tarmac so I'm just after a good road tyre for the 700c 28 rims I already have

Sounds like some sort of problem with the gears. I should go back to your retailer and ask him to look at it. Even the cheapest Shimano set up should change cleanly. Regarding tyres any slicks will give better rolling qualities. Wire bead ones will generally easier to get on, just make sure you don't nip the inner tube when you replace them.

You will probably get cable stretch on a new bike and the gears will need tweaking.

I think I found alivio and acera as smooth and quiet as deore. As advised, take it back to the shop, should get a free 6 week or 100 mile service anyhow - benefit of lbs purchase over interweb

I like Vittoria Randonneurs 700x28mm or you could try some Schwalbe Luganos in 700x23c if they will fit your wheels, see how you get on.
