Yes, that's a good route. Gumtree and eBay are awash with bikes at the minute, many little used, this is what to look for.

Have you considered a Giant Propel advanced 2. 2019 model is just above price range but 2018 could be probably found in budget. Running 105 on a lifetime warranty frame.
Some might say its quite an agressive frame set up. But ive covered thousands of miles on mine and find it a comfortable ride and certainly quick. (quicker than the recently departed winter bike an alloy defy and definitely loads quicker than MTB that replaced the defy
)
Everyone will always recommend the bike they own but bang for buck i reckon the Propel is hard to beat
