Would have thought riding bike would clean it off, then clean or replace pads.

What is sandpaper then? Brake pads are pretty much the same thing.

Gold paint will come off rotors

It came off mine, even though I didn't want it too

It will definitely come off.
BUT you will need new pads as they will be contaminated.
P.S.
If it won't come off, you should patent the process as the rotors will never wear out.
