Upgrade wheels - 2013 Giant defy 1

Hello all,

I have a 2013 Giant defy 1 done a few little upgrades, ie brake upgraded to 105, new continental gp4000s 25mm tyres and now thinking about upgrading the wheels?

Not looking to spend a fortune just upgrade from stand giant wheels.


is it worthwile and what would be recommended as a decent first wheel upgrade?

any other suggestions?? like the bike and not looking for a new one till next year

Hi Murr-Walker

I'm guessing your Defy came with the Giant S-R2 wheels. Would you keep them as training wheels or sell them to ease the cost of the new ones.

It all comes down to price. I personally would go for some Mavics or Fulcrums

You've got to look at the weight, the bearing system, and the reviews.

My 2009 Defy has some Miche Excites, 2nd hand on Ebay - the original Alexrims started to lose spokes and get out of true alot. The Miche wheelset is not actually that good, a bit heavy but they are a good solid ride and have nice aero spokes.

im not sure how big your budget is but my boss's boss is raving about these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/mavic-ksyrium-elite-s-wts-road-wheelset-2014/rp-prod117103 after our little pootle around cornwall yesterday! he has a defy 1 as well.

I love the rear hubs, its very enchanting watching them when you climb and he says they're the best thing he's put on the bike since buying it 2 years ago. also if you do get bit by the N+1 bug then they are easily transferable to the "best" bike.

Aksiums are great budget upgrade but if its only a 2013 bike I'd wear out your existing wheels more and then you'll really feel an upgrade, just now unless you are wanting to break the bank you probably won't notice much.

I have the 2914 Defy 1 and in process of upgrading. See post not so far back.

My wheels were marked on arrival, so awaiting a replacement. Have only done 600 miles on the old set, so will post back once fitted to advise how much of a difference they have made. Likely to be next week before they get here though.
