I have a giant tcx3 and the gears have been somewhat problematic, in particular the front mech, most rides result in some tweaking afterwards. I make sure i am running a straight chain line.

I think the drivetrain is shimano 2300 triple and wondered:

1. The front mech is faulty.
2. The front mech is not positioned correctly [how to tell]
3. Are triples more problematic than doubles/compacts?

Previously had friction gears and singlespeed and the gears on the tcx are a pain.

Thoughts are:
a) Change the front mech.
b) Change front and rear mech
c) Change to compact or double.
d) Change to 1x9 as spend almost all time on middle chain ring anways.

Can the shifters be kept if the front/rear mechs are upgraded?

Thanks for any tips.

What kind of tweaking do you need to do? Can you shift to all of the chainrings?

Had it long?
Bought from a shop? Take it back for them to sort out.
What was your reason for buying this bike? Sounds like you didn't know what you were buying and how it works. If so go back to the shop and ask for advice.
Your thoughts abcd seem a bit dramatic, get it sorted an enjoy.

Its basically the front mech, had problems with it dropping onto a smaller ring, and also it clashing with the chain.
The bike suits what i wish to do i.e. roads and trails.
I do not think options abcd are dramatic, i have done a fair few miles and at some point will upgrade components, and i do enjoy the bike having done a fair few miles over the winter on it.

It sounds like not enough cable tension, probably because the cable's stretched over the time you've been using it.

Turn the barrel adjuster on the downtube anti-clockwise until it stops doing it.

What kind of shifters are you using? Combined brake/gear, or shifters on the downtube?

Chain rub could be down to using big chainring/big rear cog (and small chainring/small rear cog) combinations.
