when pedaling up hill and straining away in too high a gear! there is a groaning squeaky kind of noise i recently changed the pedals (yesterday) because those bearings had gone and that solved the noise happening all the time when pedaling but has not solved the uphill squeaky noise

any ideas as to what it is? could it be the BB?i am considering replacing the BB when i have the money for a good tool and the money for the actual un55 unit

happens with trainers or my school boots i think (only ridden with school boots on new pedals)
oh yeah flat pedals by the way
and i think it is in the wet of the dry but not certain

well i rebuilt the hubs (front and rear only almost 300 mile ago and they have no play so lets rule then out
i will try properly in the saddle but i think it occurs in both
only occurs when struggling uphill in too high a gear when whizzing up hills in a good gear no problem
would it be headset? if i am pulling/straining on bars?
could it be rear brakes? (they do touch a little in one or two spots in any case) but i do hear a very quiet rubbing noise when riding down hill flat or uphill from these brakes
Cheers Ed

Could be a bit of deflection in the wheels (or elsewhere) causing some rubbing. This can happen when you are putting a lot of pressure through being in too high a gear.
Double check about the bottom bracket by taking the chain off the cranks and spinning them forwards and backwards.
am going to remve crank set and wheels etc to do a proper clean soon so will check that then

I mean that lower quality wheels / chain stays or bb's / can all move or flex a little under heavy pressure. My Shimano RS20 wheels, for instance will give brake rub on steep hills if the brakes are set with a tight clearance.
