I'm roasting some Butternut Squash in someone else's oven (I'm a gourmet burglar on the quiet). How complicated does a cooker need to be? Can anyone tell me the difference between these symbols:

a square with all sides the same thickness with a fan in it (well, I'm assuming it's not a radioactivity symbol).
a square with all sides the same thickness with a fan inside a circle in it.
a square with three sides the same but a thicker base with a fan inside a circle in it.

My cooker has 'grill' and the various oven temperatures on the dial, and that's it...

Does anyone else find cooking in someone else's kitchen difficult? I've been wishing I'd brought my knife with me, and my vegetable peeler....

Ooh I think I have these symbols, no idea what they mean, I just turn the knob two clicks to the right and it seems to do the job.

This probably won't help you, though.

New chap?

You're getting off to a bad start. Get him to take you out, or at least invest in a takeaway!

Thank you, that is most helpful...

Well, it seems to be working, ok... I went for fan in circle in equal sides square...

While we're at it, how long would anyone roast some rather small lamb cutlets for? I can't grill, because of using the oven for the squash, so need to roast...

Mmmmmm roasted butternut squash - what are you having with it? shlurp!

Know what you mean about the cooker though and sorry can't help with the foreign symbols - don't know if I'm exposing myself to ridicule here but when I'm cooking at home I even have a favourite hob!

How was your tea Arch?

Squash will take all kinds of thermo-metric abuse and still be palatable/edible.

My lodger does lamb chops, no idea how that relates to a cutlet , by seasoning them to within an inch of their lives and then dousing them with Turmeric and grilling until they're just the right side of burnt.

BTW - a rare pleasure to see you here on an evening/sunday ;).

Would this or this help?

My oven has similar symbols adn it is the fan with and without circle that is a little confusing. I think one is heat with fan blowing continuously and the other is heat with fan blowing and controlled by a thermostat. I could be wrong though.

I assumed womenfolk were born with the innate sense to understand the workings of cookers, washing machines and irons. I also thought that they enjoyed using them too:evil:

That's only when they get their own appliances as they read the instructions and then file it away in that kitchen drawer that has everything in it. ;)

In the past I have worked on the principle of turning the appliance up to max and whipping the food out once it starts to turn crispy. Which actually works quite well unless you're baking or cooking a casserole.

No idea about the symbols though...;)

Aargh. No, no, no. The first bit's ok, but all you need to do with chops or cutlets is grill them on a really hot grill for two or three minutes a sifde, so they're still pink in the middle. Same as for steak.

Thank you! Staying at a friends house while he is away, and had Mum up for the weekend, since my flat is a bit small and difficult to have her to stay at. So I'm using my friend's broadband. It's a treat to be able to log on whenever I like. And I even managed to make it look useful by looking up the timing for the roasted squash...

The meal was fine, thanks, if a little fraught in the making - cooking in a strange kitchen and all that. Roasted squash, and cutlets (they needed roasting really, they were very thick for their size, and grilling would have done the outside and not the middle, and my Mum didn't fancy too pink...), and broccoli and carrot, with M and S lemon sponge puddings afterwards.

Also discovered my friend has a miraculous knife which cuts sideways - apply pressure downwards, blade held perfectly perpendicular to board, and it kept cutting at 45 degrees - it wasn't the blade twisting, it stayed straight, but sort of skidded across. Never seen one like it! Carrot rounds all turned into ovals....

Back to the flat tonight, will be nice to get back into my own bed and use my own kitchen... Although I've got too used to central heating.

Dave, no, we'd had takeaway the night before...
