OK very basic question. When wearing padded cycling shorts, do you wear underwear? or go in the knack?

Depends on how far you are going. You can get away with gruds on a cold 10 miler but anything more than that is a potential for disaster and 'orrible things.

only found out Yesterday that your not supposed to wear any, but I am going to stick with my boxers as I only have one pair of tights at the moment and so can only wash them once a week

I tried commando, but the chafing moved from my underwear hemline to my perineum, which is definitely worse. I then started using completely seam-free undies with my padded shorts, and that works well enough for me.

i wear non padded lycra shorts with padded undershorts (like boxers) for cycling to work bcoz i don't like walking thro the office with a ducks arse. I'm a girl, we feel like that. However i don't wear pants under the boxers.
when I'm out on a normal ride i wear padded cycleshorts only.
as a general rule, the pad goes next to your skin.
