I bought a new seat post for the other halfs raleigh wisp, but unable to insert it.

Took the old one to the lbs and they measured it at 25.4mm so supplied with the same.

I've greased it and tried to open out the collar of the tube with a flat head driver, and filed the edges.

But it just won't go in, has slightly chewed up the end of the new post.

Next step is the hammerand a block of wood, is this advisable? Its the only way the old one came out.

Perhaps the old one was too big as well!

I'd have thought that hammering things in and out of of bicycle frames ranked pretty high on a long list of Things Not To Do To A Bike!

Dont worry, I was gentle ;)

The size was stamped on the post aswell so was correct.

managed to get it in in the end, but it took 4 hands rather than 2! I got someone to push it in whilst I was spreading the collar with the flat bladed driver, it was still a bit tight but was movable like this, I'm guessing that the post had been overtightened at some point, who knows?

You're in good company ColinJ

I found this as I've just discovered my carbon post is stuck in my carbon frame. Eeek!

Apparently I have to jam some metal between the seat clamp in the seatpost, and the top tube. Then tighten the clamp. Bloody carbon fibre.

Had this as well on my raleigh clubman.
Same size out, same size in, i even verniered the new one. Bugger it was tight. Rod with some emery tape on and a drill to clean out the seat tube...still tight. Perhaps its just a Raleigh thing. Perhaps the seat tube had/has some slight denting/deformation that pinches the post.

Yes i put calipers on these too, although the .4 of a mm is hard to read on mine.

I ran a half round file around the collar as this seemed to be the sticking point, as i say another pair of hands pushing whilst I kept the collar open a bit did the trick.

Not sure if a raleigh thing, I have an '86 record ace that was untouched for a couple of decades, the post and stem came straight out, still covered in gloop, perfect. Suppose it depends on the care given on the initial build.
