Hi,

Ive been quoted a price of £100 for labour only to upgrade my Bike to ultegra group set.

Does anyone feel that's a bit steep

Can anyone recommend an independent mechanic from the Dartford area

If you're doing the whole thing, there's a fair bit of work involved: cabling; fitting new levers etc; bar tape; new derailleurs. I reckon £100 is about right. Might be a bit far from you but Welling Cycles is very good

Sounds about right especially if they are doing the stripping. Are you proving the parts or are they?
What's on there at the moment, you may need to think about whether or how the wheel set can work with 11 speed

Average lbs labour rate around £40 an hour and it's a good 2 hour job to get it all sorted properly

cool cheers guys, i currently have 105 groupset with Dura ace front chain ring. However a friend of mine is changing over to Dura ace groupset and selling his ultegra group set.

Just wondering if i will benefit from changing the whole thing or not.

Don't expect a lot of difference. May or may not be worth the outlay. Depends on whether the bling or tart factor is important
Are they 10 or 11 speed group sets

As what Vickster says.
You won't notice any difference.
However if I saw your bike, I would notice the difference.. that's the difference :okay:

I Have just had a full bike build £125 (north)
Given the cables where internally routed !
And they will have to take off your 105 before they start £100 seems Fair .
As said above the difference between 105/ultegra will be minimal

Wonder what the difference is between the 5700 105 and 5800 105 and 6800 Ultegra in terms of shifting, seeing as the difference between the previous incarnations of 105 and Ultegra is minimal.

Feedback seems to be 11 speed smoother, but guess that could be psychological. On the SRAM front, I'm switching my carbon from 10 speed apex to 11 rival. 11 rival seems better than 10 but that could simply be based on set up, wear etc. I think there is quite a strong placebo effect!

I'm upgrading from shimano 2300 8 spd to 105 5800 11 spd on Wednesday. Doing it myself and wondering whether to pay myself £100 flat rate or £40 per hour and try to string the job along for 2.5 hours

As @vickster asks, it depends on which series groupsets are involved. 105 5600 or 5700, Ultegra 6700 or 6800 or perhaps older? It also depends on how much you're paying for the Ultegra groupset.

£100 is a fair price for the labour, but it could also be a good opportunity to learn how to do it yourself. £100 would be enough to buy a workstand plus all the tools required if you don't have them already. You might even have enough left over to get your LBS to give it a quick tune up once you're done.

Either way, budget for new cables and possibly chain/cassette depending on wear. No point upgrading with worn bits.

FWIW, you can buy a new 105 5800 full groupset with 2 year warranty for £272 right now or £198 presuming you don't change the chainset and BB. (cassette and chain from CRC and the rest from Ribble with 10% discount until tomorrow).

105 5700 10 speed and Ultegra 6800 11 speed are worlds apart in terms of shifting quality and speed.

I have a bike with each on and the newer Ultegra bike was noticeably different immediately. As above, I thought this could be the placebo effect, as the kit was all new. Having now done about 20% more miles on the Ultegra, and having changed cables and chains on both, the Ultegra is still better in terms of shifting quality and speed. No question about it.

Difficult to quantify in real world terms, but a lot more enjoyable to ride.

The new front dérailleur of the 11 speed shimano kit is hugely better as an example. I assume this carries forward to the 105 5800 also, but no experience there, sorry.

As suggested already, I would be tempted to maybe look at the brand new 105 5800 groupsan and enjoy fitting myself.
