Ultegra front changer - index problem

I've been having a few teething problems with the gears on my new Giant TCR 0. I've been adjusting the front derailleur and discovered the front STI lever seems to have three index positions, even though the bike has a 50/34 compact double chainset. Is this normal? Is it just a case of adjusting the high/low limit screws properly, or has it got the wrong lever on it?

There are three positions in case you need to "trim" it. Say you set it up so all the cassette is accessible from the 50 chainring without rubbing the front mech cage....you might find that in the 34 ring you need slightly different front cage positions to avoid rubbing, depending on where you in the cassette.

Yes, I see. I looked at the instructions for the front mech on the Shimano site that talked about this. I think I've got it sorted now. Thanks for your help!
