Hull managed to pull it off with the old town. It's doable.

Haven’t been to Hull, so, cannot comment, but, interesting to hear that. That solution will not work for South Shields, local authority has either demolished, or, is in the process of demolishing the “old” buildings.

Middlesbrough, I worked at Hartlepool Power Station for a while we used to cut across through Middlesbrough through all the industrial chemical works etc, it was dire.
On the plus side we took a ride on the transporter bridge one day.

Point of order:

This is supposed to be about SURPRISE let downs... Was anybody REALLY surprised that some of those towns were a bit grotty?

Beat me to it there, I was just about to say something along the lines of, 'if some of you were disappointed by the places you've mentioned then you must have had very low expectations in the first place.'

Scarborough.

To be fair I didn't have great expectations when I stayed there once for work, but it's one of the few places I've been to where there seems to be an air of menace in every pub you walk in to.

How come Accrington hasn't been mentioned?🤔

I've never been within 50 miles of Accrington but thanks to your posts @Accy cyclist , I have a very clear image of the stylish men and women strolling along the leafy avenues and taking tea in the winter garden. I dream of visiting one day.

Cos none of us have actually been that stupid to go there knowing what it’ll be like

I did a ride which ended up at Accrington station and caught the train back from there. I encountered some dodgy looking young men on a stretch of secluded cycle path heading towards the station. They didn't cause me any trouble but they looked intimidating and I was worried that they might because there was nobody else around to help me out if they did. There were some more weed/booze casualties hanging about at the station itself. It was a bit depressing and didn't really make me feel like going back there for a day out!

Sounds delightful!
I saw a road sign once for Accrington when driving from Manchester to Harrogate…I kept going to the delightfulness of N Yorks ;)
