Hi Ellis,

Any idea how many miles you got out of the gatorskins before you replaced them?

Oh yes they do!
Ever seen a time triallist using 32mm tyres?

All things being equal a wider tyre will roll along easier than a thinner tyre at the same pressure.
However, all things are not equal. Narrower tyres are run at higher pressures. A narrower tyre should weigh a lot less too.
When climbing or accelerating rotating mass really makes a difference.

The OP isn't a time-trialist riding at 50 km/h. Aerodynamics aren't part of the equation.

There's nothing theoretical about the fact that wider tyres have lower rolling resistance. Rotating mass isn't worth an ounce of coon sh!t on tour -- comfort and rolling resistance is paramount.

Sorry I didn't mean to suggest that the OP was time trialling. Merely putting forward some evidence that wider tyres are not quicker.

I fully agree with your comments on wider tyres for touring. When you've got X kg of luggage in your panniers a few grams on the wheels is neither here nor there and certainly not worth sacrificing comfort for. However, I don't class 70miles unlaiden as a tour. It's just a long Sunday morning ride. Something I wouldn't hesitate to use narrow tyres for.

Each to their own I suppose. Thats one of the best things about cyclechat. loads of riding styles and therefore loads of different opinions on stuff like this!

What  I have done 969.6 miles so far and they are no where near ready to be replace...

Theres nothing wrong with the rubber on the tyre. The bead has come away from the tyre in a section.

Must have been a very dodgy set the wide tyres (700x37) on my hybrid (used in all weathers) show no sign of wear and done nearly 6000miles. I just replaced one on my winter bike, it done over 3700 miles (700x25) and out of vanity  I replaced the tyres on my summer bike after only 2500miles; 600 miles
