Tyre written off?

Rode over some broken bottle glass Friday. Just found one tyre down to 40, checked and found a piece of glass about 3mm long embedded in the tread. Unfortunately it has also cut the carcass so when I repaired the puncture and pumped it up, even at 60 it was bulging around the cut. I guess I did the right thing throwing it in the bin?

Question: what are the little screw thingies called on the end of a Presta valve and why do they bend so easily then snap off when you straighten them? Grrrrr!

I'm frugal but a bulging tyre is a non runner in my book, or at least ride with a nervous eye

I had a horrid slash through the side wall once that I managed to patch emergency style with a pice of sidewall from an old tyre, that worked fine for a week or two until payday but it didn't look good

vavle stem? bent on a lot once but it strightened ok, I never did fine the one that thankfully fired into the sky once when removing the track pump, thank gawd it didn't hit me in the eye
