Ok, try as I might I cannot understand the various permutations for tyre sizing. My rims are marked as "622x19c". I'm thinking about asking Santa for some Schwalbe winter tyres; the only size Wiggle have are 26x1.75. Will these fit? And if not, what size tyre should I be looking for? At the moment I'm running Conti Sport Contacts, which seem to have the markings "28x13" and "8x15/8" on them.

I've been all over the web, and the more I read the more confused I get.

Surely somebody must be able to invent a simple, straightforward tyre sizing system!

No those tyres will not fit your rims as they are a mountain bike size and you have road bike size rims. It is a little confusing I agree. the 622 is one of the numbers used in the ETRO numbering system - basically 700c = 622 - it refers to the circumference. In old money it is approx 28" - hence the 28 on your Contis. The other part simply refers to the width of the rim and determines how wide a tyre might be fitted - e.g 700 x 25 tyre would fit fine on your 622x19 rim. There is lots of detail here:- http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html#iso
It would only get simpler if there were only a few sizes of wheels but there are lots of different ones.
