tyre size vs wheel

My Mrs has recently got the Decathlon Hoprider and can pootle about 16 miles on it so far.
I wanted to make it a bit easier for her so I want to change the tyres from the knobbly ones now on it, to smoother ones.

The current size is 700x38 - do I need to replace with a 38? - or how can I tell if it will safely take another size?

Any recommendations on a faster tyre would be appreciated. Thanks,

You can prob safely fit a narrower one - 35 or 32mm - wouldn't go any less. Just fitting a smoother tread will make a huge difference for her. Conti Contact or City ride are good & hard wearing as are Schwalbe Marathon

Without knowing the wheel rim width it's a bit tricky. However, with 37mm as standard I'd guarantee a 32mm will fit, and probably a 28mm will.
I'd go for a 32mm, unless you have a 28mm knocking about you could try.

This ETRTO recommendation chart shows the ranges of tire (sic) width that is recommended for each rim width. I tried to check this but the ETRTO standards don't seem available to download without subscription - I got this chart from here. It may be there's a later version than 2007. Another site quotes DIN7800 which uses the ETRTO data.

Don't forget to pump your BH's tyres up a bit more, Neil, to get them rolling faster especially if you're changing from knobbly ones to smoother ones.
