I've just been to pump my tyres (GP400s) up for my cycle tomorrow. About an 1/8 inch from the wheel rim on the tyre wall is a groove that goes all the way around the tyre. Hanging from the groove was a thread which I managed to pull off without it coming away all around the tyre.

I have never noticed this before but when I checked it was on both tyres. Is this something to be concerned about or will I be ok?

Hope everyone is making the most of the weather and that all the people who have had 'offs' get back to cycling before too long.

I think I read somewhere that those threads were ok and not of great importance - might have been on BR or on here. That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject btw!

My 'off' was as I came out of the underpass where the A590 & A591 intersect which you will know is usually v.busy - fortunately not a car about!

Hope you get a better answer to your question than mine!

Thanks SD. I think I know where you came off now. Was it Brettargh Holt roundabout. I take it you'd come from Kendal on the bypass(A591) and were using the roundabout to head back that way? It is usually very busy and because of it's size a very fast roundabout. In some ways you have been quite fortunate I would have thought.
Thanks for pointing it out. I have thought of using that to go up to Grange on the A590 coming over the M6 from Endmoor. Not too confident though as the roads are very busy.

I hope your confidence is returning and you are enjoying your cycling once again.

Yes that's the one - I normally would give it a miss but it was early on a Saturday; so light traffic. I came along the rough cycle path from Prizet as the by-pass narrows down too much for my liking there plus it is *loody fast on there at times!

Was intending to do Kendal > Milnthorpe > Arnside > Milnthorpe > Crooklands > Kendal

Just a crappy gravel patch on the road edge was all it took - went past it today on the way to Levens and Brigsteer and it's only about 3' x 8' long. Cest la vie.

Continental tyres seem to suffer from threads coming loose in the sidewall, but it's not a particular problem. Cut them off as they appear and just manage it. I had a set of sport contacts on my commuter for a good long time (they're still in the spares box) that have lost multiple threads from the sidewall.

Thanks mcshroom. I had visions of my tube blowing a hole in the sidewall. Got a poorly dog so may have to abandon tomorrows ride for a trip to the vets.

Seems to have a Cumbrian flair this thread.

This is my second pair of GP4000s and get those threads frequently, but only after a few thousand km. The tyres still perform
well, nothing to worry about.
