I know the old saying you get what you pay for but are the dearer tyres worth the extra on a mtb..

I'm just about to buy a pair but I'm a bit confused as some of the lower price ones are rated better than some of the dearer ones.
What do you think?

Some MTB tyres are very good for specific things, such as sand, mud, tarmac, dry trails, road etc.
Some are average at a few things, but like most things, they'll be some bargains and some 'reassuringly expensive' items.

What sort of thing are you after?

I was looking at a tyre for dry trails, gravel, road, just mountain stuff really but not wet or mud..

I did write a few names I'll stick them up in a minute.

Specialized Fast track.
Conti Mountain King.
Schwalbe Nobby Nic..
Some have varying prices on the same model.

Personally I'd go with the Panaracer Fire XC for a general all-round tyre it's pretty near perfect (and Chain Reaction have them for £14 at the mo).

If you want a bit more volume, and a slightly more aggressive tread the Continental Vertical are excellent all round tyres = again at a sensible price.

Still not sure where I'm going... so I'm going to start at the bottom and work up.

Schwalbe.. Land Cruiser @ £ 15.029
Schwalbe.. Black Jack @ £ 13.49
Conti Mountain King @ £ 13.39
Specialized Captain Sport @ £ 17.00
Specialized Fast Track @ £ 17.00

My needs for these tyres are.... Good in the dry off road and good rolling speed...
When these arrive I will fit straight on my bike and keep the one's I have for latter use, so what would you chose?

If I dont like them I've not lost too much.

good tyres are well worth the extra money - only problem is when you slice one open beyond repair after just a few rides, it can get very expensive.
However, always buy the best tyres you can reasonably afford. They will be light, stronger and faster with better rubber compounds and well designed tread patterns
it's not always easy choosing the correct tyre for your needs though.
Continental X-kings are good all-rounders - buy the black chilli versions of any Continental tyres as they are handmade in Germany

avoid wire bead tyres if your budget allows

I'm not bothered on the price so the best way I can explain is...
I have a Honda Blackbird and if I was to buy some Honda brake pads I would be paying for the Honda name and if I bought some EBC pads I would be paying half price for the same pads..
These will be the first mtb tyres I've bought so hence the questions.
Some good points you made in your reply..

Thanks..

non-branded MTB tyres are usually total crap
what might be the case with your Honda brake pads is not true when it comes to MTB tyres

That said, there are some expensive crap tyres out there!

Just looked on the web and I found some Conti X King Race Sports and some X King Pro Tection Tyres both made of the chili compound.
The Race Sport is only £36 and the Pro Tection £40 which dont seem too bad.

You're all over the place on this. One minute you're looking at £13 each and the next you're on about stuff at £80 a pair! Do you go into Tesco looking for a 'value' meal and come out with a 'finest' one? Unless you talking about a pair.
