Before taking my new bike out tonight, I noticed that the guidelines on the Vittoria Zaffiro tyres said "Min 100psi, Max 145psi". I normally have my tyres at 100psi, but I decided to inflate them to 120psi.

1 mile into the ride, the rear tyre went BOOM.

Is it a coincidence? Or is it because I am fat?

The tyre or the innertube?

Have you used the Vittoria app for tyre pressures?

The app suggests that I should be running them at 110psi, so that's what I'll stick to in future! However, I think the puncture was caused by dodgy rim tape. I took the tyre off last night and the tape (which was just a thin strip of gaffa tape) was all over the place, with several spoke holes exposed.

Would've expected better from wheels on a £1200 bike.

If it went BOOM, the inner tube has managed to escape from the inside of the tyre.

The most likely cause is that the tube was caught between the tyre bead and the rim. The tube can often be pinched tightly enough that no air gets into the trapped bit of tube for quite a long time, but when it does start, it gets in faster very quickly and the tube explodes.
You ought to go all round the wheel on both sides checking that the tube isn't trapped, after a few pump strokes when the tyre is still soft enough for you to be able to push the tyre in away from the rim. This step is frequently omitted (by me too).
